2020 was the year of video calling, and it’s probably here to stay. If you don’t have a flat rate, it’s a good idea to know which video calls use the least data.
Whether it’s a work obligation or the need to see the face of a loved one in these tough months of 2020, video calls have become the star means of communication. The downside they have is that video takes up much more than text or photos. In most cases we try to carry out video calls from home or from the workplace, because that is where there is Wifi, these communications come free.
We can distinguish three different groups.
On the one hand, services that only want to offer video calls without presumption. These are very popular and saturated services, which need to save bandwidth.
Then there are those that prioritise video quality, regardless of consumption.
Finally we have the professional apps, focused on companies, which consume something more because they want to give a good service to their professional clients.
In the group of the most economical apps, the big winner is Apple’s FaceTime.
Next we have WhatsApp, Telegram, and Facebook Messenger, which rub the 7 MB per minute. It seems as if they have agreed to consume almost the same amount……
Next on the list are business-focused apps, such as Teams, Skype or Zoom, with resolutions higher than 720p rising above 10 MB per minute. They want their professional users not to suffer cuts or blurred images.
