An innovative company is proposing the idea of installing data centres in retrofitted sewage treatment plants, using surplus heat to speed up processes in biological reactors. Installing these reactors in old plants frees up space that can be used to build a data centre, which is valuable in crowded regions where there is not much land available for this use.

The heat released by data centre cooling systems is finding different uses for society and other industries, thanks to the ingenuity of a few innovators. Current reuse of this surplus heat is mainly focused on providing heating in cold regions, or providing hot air for certain industries nearby in data centres. But, now, Tomorrow Water is proposing another very interesting use, which is to accelerate processes in biological reactors used in modern wastewater reclamation plants (WRRFs).
