More than 50 years ago, the foundations of computing were laid thanks to Moore’s Law. Now, in the middle of 2021, we are beginning to see the end of this rule that has remained unchanged for five decades.
The company TSMC has received the green light to start building the processor factory that will develop the first chips at 2 nm, ahead of giants like Samsung, Intel and GlobalFoundries.
The Taiwanese company received the green light on Wednesday from the country’s Environmental Review Committee to begin construction of the factory in Hsinchu, one of Taiwan’s largest chip manufacturing centers, in early 2022.
What this announcement leaves us about the imminent arrival at 2 nm is that Moore’s Law has its days numbered, with the new Koomey Act that will eventually be imposed over this decade.
